“Scotty, you have the bridge. Get us as far away from here as possible.” With that, Jim Kirk strode off and left Spock to take care of Dr. McCoy.
Kirk flung himself onto the bed in his quarters. He didn’t move for a long time. In his mind, he kept replaying the last moments of Edith Keeler’s life. The rush of relief at finding McCoy had been tempered by the grief of losing her. He’d wanted to lash out at the doctor’s comments but knew he couldn’t – McCoy didn’t understand. Instead, Kirk had clung to him.
With a sigh, Kirk rolled over and stared at the ceiling. He hoped never to see the Guardian of Forever again.
After deciding he’d wallowed enough, Kirk got up and took a shower, washing all of 1930’s Earth from his body. He had one towel around his waist and was drying off with another when the door chimed.
“Enter,” he said. He knew who it would be and he didn’t look up as McCoy stepped through the door. Relief at getting his friend and lover back flooded through Kirk again.
McCoy was silent for a moment, leaning against the wall in that casual way he did, watching as Kirk finished drying. Finally, Kirk met his eyes.
“I’m sorry, Jim,” he took a step towards Kirk. “Spock told me,” he glanced away briefly. “Spock told me you were in love with her.
Kirk steeled himself, preparing for an inquisition, but McCoy just watched him.
“She was...fascinating,” said Kirk, tossing aside the towel in his hand. Both men sort of smiled at his weak attempt at imitating Spock. “She was born in the wrong time, Bones.”
Kirk turned and walked back towards his bunk. He sat on the edge and let his guard down.
The doctor followed him and began massaging Kirk’s shoulders, “It seems she was.”
Kirk leaned back, enjoying the warmth of McCoy’s hands. “I thought I might lose you...that we wouldn’t find you in time.”
McCoy chuckled, “And yet you managed to fall in love with somebody else?” His hands stopped and his tone turned more serious, “She was somethin’ special.”
Kirk had a flash of a thought; the history of the world that was before he and Spock jumped through the Guardian. He wondered if Edith Keeler had fallen in love with McCoy in that version of things - if McCoy had fallen in love with her, too.
The doctor’s hands started massaging again and Kirk reached up to give one a squeeze. Turning to face McCoy he said, “Everything’s as it should be now.”
The corner of McCoy’s mouth curved up a touch, “Yes, I believe it is.”
Kirk returned the smile and knew everything would be all right between them. Eventually.
